Sauce Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup soy sauce
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Thickening Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Combine Sweeteners and Soy Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, and honey. Stir continuously until the mixture begins to simmer gently.
  2. Add Aromatics: Add the minced garlic and grated fresh ginger to the simmering sauce. Continue to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  3. Make Cornstarch Slurry: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water until smooth to create a slurry that will thicken the sauce.
  4. Thicken the Sauce: Stir the cornstarch slurry into the saucepan. Continue simmering for 2 to 4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Finish with Vinegar: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the rice vinegar thoroughly to balance the flavors.
  6. Add Toasted Sesame Seeds and Serve: Mix in the toasted sesame seeds. Use immediately as a glaze or sauce, or allow to cool and store for later use.

Notes

  • Adjust the thickness by adding more or less cornstarch slurry according to your preference.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce if you want a less salty flavor.
  • To toast sesame seeds, dry roast them in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant.
  • This sauce keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari.
