Ingredients

Scale

Green Beans

  • 1216 ounces fresh green beans, trimmed

Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons granulated sugar or honey
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons water

Aromatics and Seasonings

  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare Green Beans: Rinse the fresh green beans under cold water and trim the ends by snapping or cutting them off to prepare for cooking.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the low-sodium soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, granulated sugar or honey, cornstarch, and water until smooth and well combined. This sauce will thicken when heated and cling to the green beans.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the toasted sesame oil. Once warm, add the minced garlic and ginger. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, taking care not to burn the aromatics.
  4. Cook Green Beans: Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet. Stir and cook for about 4 minutes until they are tender but still crisp, absorbing the flavorful oil and aromatics.
  5. Add Sauce and Simmer: Pour the prepared sauce over the green beans. Stir well to coat evenly. Let the sauce simmer with the green beans until it thickens and all the flavors meld together, about 1-2 minutes.
  6. Finish and Serve: Add crushed red pepper flakes to your desired level of spiciness, stir to incorporate, and then sprinkle with sesame seeds for added texture and flavor. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use fresh green beans for the best crunch and flavor.
  • You can adjust the amount of crushed red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
  • Low-sodium soy sauce is recommended to keep the sodium level balanced.
  • The recipe can be made vegan by using honey alternatives or replacing honey with sugar.
  • Toast sesame seeds lightly for enhanced flavor, if desired.
  • If you prefer softer green beans, cook an additional 1-2 minutes but avoid overcooking to maintain texture.
