This easy and delicious Pumpkin Donut recipe combines moist pumpkin puree with a yellow cake mix to create soft, flavorful donuts perfect for fall or any time you want a quick treat. Baked instead of fried, these donuts are a simple way to enjoy the taste of pumpkin with minimal effort and customizable toppings like caramel drizzle, frosting, or powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Scale

Donut Batter

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 can pumpkin puree (15 oz)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the donuts.
  2. Make Batter: In a large bowl, combine the dry yellow cake mix and the entire 15 oz can of pumpkin puree. Mix well until all ingredients are fully combined. Optionally, you can add spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor, but this is not necessary.
  3. Prepare Donut Pan: Grease your donut pan thoroughly to prevent sticking. To fill the pan easily, transfer the thick batter into a piping bag or use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off.
  4. Fill Donut Cavities: Pipe or spoon the batter into each donut cavity until it is about half full. The batter is thick, so filling halfway ensures the donuts cook evenly without overflowing.
  5. Bake Donuts: Place the filled donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. To check doneness, gently press the top of a donut with your finger; if it springs back, they are done.
  6. Cool: Remove the donuts from the oven and allow them to cool completely in the pan before removing.
  7. Add Toppings and Serve: Once cooled, add your choice of toppings such as caramel drizzle, frosting, sprinkles, or a dusting of powdered sugar. Serve immediately for the best taste.
  8. Storage: If not serving right away, store plain donuts (without toppings) in an airtight container for up to 1 day. Add toppings just before serving to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • You can add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves to the batter for added fall flavor.
  • Do not overfill the donut pan to prevent spreading and uneven cooking.
  • Cool donuts completely before adding toppings to avoid melting or sogginess.
  • These donuts are best eaten the day they are made for optimal freshness.
  • Use a piping bag or zip-top bag to make filling the donut pan easier and less messy.
